  • 🚨 Too many girls are still missing out on sport — and where they live can make a huge difference

‼️ New research has revealed a worrying gap between boys’ and girls’ access to sport across the UK, showing that thousands of teenage girls are being left behind when it comes to opportunities to be active.

📍 Researchers analysed all 650 UK parliamentary constituencies and found a clear postcode divide:

⚽ Girls aged 11–18 take part in around 84 minutes less sport every week than boys on average.

🏙️ In some urban areas, the gap is even bigger — with girls missing out on more than 100 minutes of exercise each week compared with boys.

🌳 In rural communities, the difference is smaller, but girls are still behind, missing around 75 minutes per week.

The research found that girls in cities are the least likely to be active, while areas with lower sports provision experience a much wider participation gap.

The biggest inequalities were found in parts of the West Midlands and north-east, while some areas of the south-east, north-west and Scotland showed much smaller differences.

But this isn’t just about numbers — it’s about opportunities.

Sport gives young people so much more than fitness. It builds:

✅ Confidence
✅ Friendships
✅ Teamwork
✅ Resilience
✅ A sense of belonging

Yet barriers including access to facilities, safety concerns, social pressures and a lack of organised opportunities are preventing too many girls from getting involved.

The research suggests that improving access to sport for teenage girls could deliver huge benefits, including more than £640 million in annual economic value through improved productivity and reduced pressure on the NHS.

Every girl deserves the chance to experience the positive impact sport can have.

The question now is: what more can schools, clubs, communities and decision-makers do to make sure opportunity is equal for everyone?

  • ⚽ Sport has the power to transform lives – not just improve fitness.

A fantastic initiative launching this September at Moreton School in Wolverhampton is showing how schools can use sport to make a real difference to young people’s mental health.

The school has announced a new partnership with Sport in Mind, a charity that promotes better mental wellbeing through physical activity. Together, they’ll deliver coaching sessions, wellbeing activities and school assemblies focused on mental health, helping students understand the positive impact that being active can have on their emotional wellbeing.

One of the most inspiring parts of the programme is that Moreton School’s Paris Saint-Germain Rising Stars students will complete the ASDAN Personal Development Programme, giving them the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to become Wellbeing Champions. They’ll then support fellow students and even work with pupils in local primary schools, helping to create a culture where young people support one another.

The school’s headteacher described the partnership as “a real statement of intent”, highlighting that mental health support isn’t an add-on—it’s central to helping every student thrive.

At EdSport, this is exactly what we believe.

Sport isn’t just about winning matches or developing technical ability. Every coaching session is an opportunity to build confidence, resilience, leadership, teamwork and positive relationships. When young people feel supported, they’re more likely to enjoy school, stay active and reach their full potential—both on and off the pitch.

It’s fantastic to see schools investing in programmes that recognise the wider benefits of sport, and we hope to see many more initiatives like this across the UK.

💙 Because sometimes the biggest victory isn’t on the scoreboard—it’s the confidence a young person gains through sport.

Well done Moreton School in Wolverhampton 👏
